What Causes Throat Congestion While Suffering From Thalassemia?

I have Thalassemia and I choke a lot when i get hot, and in my sleep. My throat feels like it closes up and I cant breathe. Is this normal and is there any thing i can do to prevent it? Sometimes it hits me with no warning and immediately. My eyes start to water and I cant get it under control before someone notices. Kind of embarrassing! Is this because of my anemia?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The recurrent throat congestion suggests underlying low immunity, allergy to particular allergen or other issues which has to be evaluated with physical examination and series of investigations.

Hope this information clears your doubt.

Thanks
