What Causes Temporary Loss Of Consciousness In Elderly?

My 92 year old father lost consciousness for about 90 seconds. He was non responsive during this time. Then he vomited and regained consciousness and seemed to be ok. Paramedics were called and checked his vitals. Blood pressure was a bit low 110/60. Blood sugar was a little elevated ~190, but he had just been eating. my father takes one Metformin pill for sugar and takes 1 blood pressure pill in the evening.

Hi
Thanks for posting your question on HCM.
I appreciate your concern for your father.

Brief reversible loss of consciousness in an elderly patient with risk factors such as diabetes and hypertension are highly suggestive of a condition referred to as Transient ischemic attack (TIA).
It develops due to reduced blood supply to the brain either due to atherosclerosis of the main blood vessels (carotids) supply the brain or it can also occur due to a clot (thrombus).

In view of his age and the risk factors, he should be examined by a physician and he needs the following investigations to find out the cause of this ischemic attack like ECG, Echocardiography, Carotid doppler study, CT scan, etc.

Hope these suggestions could be useful in getting him treated.

Best regards.
