What Causes Swollen Tonsils And Swollen Lymph Nodes?

Hello, I am a male, 33 years of age, weighing about 238 lbs. I have had an unprotected sexual encounter with a female in her mid to late 40's who I did not know at the time very well. This was 7 weeks and 5 days ago. Two weeks after possible exposer (HIV/STI), my tonsils started to swell and turn red. Due to this condition, I started to get very concerned, and I started triggering other symptoms such as tension headaches, neck stiffness and a sensation of swollen lymph nodes throughout my body. Till this current day, my tonsils are swollen. I have taken a full STD test to include HIV at 4 weeks. Everything has come out negative. I saw an ENT two days ago and he said I possibly have gatroesophageal reflux that is causing my tonsils to inflame, and recommended that I get them taken out. Throughout my health history, I have never experienced swollen tonsils that have lasted this long. I have been checked for strep and the results were negative. Also, after the initial scare two weeks after possible exposer, I contacted the woman I was with. It was a risky move on my part, but she was receptive and we had a relieving conversation over the phone. She is in the Air Force Reserve and works fulltime with the FAA and her title is equivalent to a GS14. She is also married with kids and was only in my neck of the woods for training with the FAA. She was open to me and explained that both I and her made a mistake and should learn from it, which I agree. She also stated that this was a onetime incident and that she is HIV/STI negative. She told me she took an HIV test in March through mandatory requirements through the Air Force and then another test a few weeks ago due through concern with our sexual encounter. Bottom line, I should not be worried, but I am human and the negative thoughts still linger as to what is causing my tonsils to be swollen. Please access my situation and give me your professional thoughts and or opinions as to what my tonsils may be going through and the probability of HIV infection.

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hello,

If you faced a trauma then the internal and external structure of nose has changed. This obviously can cause nasal obstruction and subsequently breathing difficulties.

You need to do an endoscopy of the nose. And subsequently we can say whether you need operating or not. If you are taking coffee and having increased heart beats then you may have PSVT (Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia).

This is a problem many young patients faced. Decrease your coffee intake and also consult a Cardiologist for that.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Rajat Basak
