What Causes Swollen Tongue With White Patches?

My son has a white coating on his tongue. He has a sore throat and his tongue is swollen. He does not have a fever and was tested for strep. The rapid strep test came back negative. We are still waiting on results for the two day culture. Symptoms are not improving.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

As per your query white coating on the tongue is most commonly due to yeast infection known as Oral Thrush and it leads to inflammation and swollen tongue secondary to infection.
Strep test is negative as it is bacterial infection while he is suffering from fungal infection..

Nothing to worry, consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and he can do a thorough clinical evaluation and if thrush is a diagnosis he can advise your son to gargle with Nystatin mouthwash, Clotrimazole lozenges and take ample of probiotics like Yoghurt and garlic..
Drinl plenty of water and do warm saline gargles for sore throat..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..
