What Causes Swollen Tender Spot In Sternum?

Hi I m a 59 yr old female and in fair condition. For the last two weeks I have had this swollen tender spot inside under my sternum and it hurts to take a deep breath , sneeze or cough. I ve never experienced this pain before. I do have a hyatal hernia, and I have had an ulcer, but am on meds for it

I can understand your concern.
Pain on coughing, sneezing, deep breathing etc is seen in pleurisy (inflammation of pleura).
And most common cause for this is lung infection.
So we should first rule out lung infection in your case.
So get done chest x ray first.
If chest x ray is normal then no need to worry for lung infection.
GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) due to hiatus hernia can also cause similar symptoms.
Along with drugs, you need to follow certain lifestyle modifications for better relief in hiatus hernia m
Avoid hot and spicy food. Avoid junk food. Avoid large meals, instead take frequent small meals. Go for walk after meals. Keep 2-3 pillows under head in the bed to prevent reflux.
Don't worry, you will be alright.
