What Causes Swollen Red Patches Around Ankles?
My friend has noticed swelling in her ankles over the last few days. She is only 32. All of a sudden today it became worse and her skins has bright red patches from around the ankle area to almost halfway up to the knee. One leg is worse than the other but it affects both and elevation doesn t help. Standing makes her feel the discomfort worse. She complained of becoming tired suddenly but that s, in my opinion, because she slowed down as she has been working a lot and gets tired as soon as she stops at night. What could be causing the redness and swelling. It s concerning me as it s super red and happened rather quick supposedly. Should she go to the emergency room?

Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like hair follicle infection, standing for prolonged periods of time , taking estrogen , antidepressants , blood pressure medications , steroids or NSAIDs , infection in the leg area , venous insufficiency , organ failure like heart , liver and kidney or lymphedema. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to consult cardiologist for proper diagnosis once again. Doctor may order heart tests like ECG and complete blood profile . Doctor may prescribe diuretic like furosemide. Avoid touching or pricking rashes. Apply cold compresses. Keep your legs elevated while lying down lower your salt consumption and avoid standing for long period .
