What Causes Swollen Itchy Peeling Between My Left Big Toe?

I have peeling between my left big toe. It itches really bad. The bottom of my foot in that area seems a little swollen. It had a blister si I put neosporium and bandaid on it. The skin comes off in big thick chunks. I have cancer and neuropathy in my feet but not real bad. I finished 9 months of chemo in sept 2013. Following a 3 month checkup I will now be starting 6 more months of chemo on March 17th. My immune system is shot. I m worried this will become infected. I have looked at spider bite photos and none look like this. I am using an anti fungal cream and spraying a drying powder on that area. Seems to not itch as bad but no change as to how it looks. What should my next step be?

Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

I would keep a possibility of fungal infection/Tinea Pedis. Tinea pedis can manifest as itching and scaly between the toe webs, specially in shoe wearing population. The sweat/moisture that gets trapped between the toe webs gives the fungus a chance to proliferate.

If I was the treating doctor I would have asked you to use a topical antifungal like clotrimazole/sertaconazole/luliconazole cream, twice daily, regularly for 4 weeks.

An Oral antifungal e.g fluconazole once weekly for4 -6 weeks OR oral terbinafine once daily for 2-4 weeks OR Itraconazole 100mg capsule, 2 capsules once daily for a week, is also advisable for a more complete cure

An OTC antihistamine e.g cetrizine 10mg once daily would help you in symptomatic itch relief.

Keeping the area dry and wearing sandals or floaters instead of shoes and also regular use of an antifungal dusting powder would help in preventing the recurrence.

regards
