What Causes Swollen Hands And Lower Legs During 34 Weeks Of Pregnancy?

Hi im 34 weeks pregnant as of today, and for the past 3 weeks i ve been having bad swelling in my hands, lower legs, ankles and feet. I only seem to swell when im resting my body, i told my doctor and i was told to rest and watch my salt intake and i ve done that too, and im at work today and the swelling is so bad that it feel like my bone in my leg is about to pop out and it hurts just by me sitting at the desk so i try to walk around but it causes more pain to my ankles and feet and i have a burning sensation to my feet when im walking around.

Hello,

Hope you are having regular check ups with your obstetrician. Here we should think of two possibilities
1) If the swelling is there and it is painful you should get a doppler study of your lower limb veins to rule out a deep vein thrombosis which is clotting of blood in leg veins which causes the swelling. If it is the cause it is less likely to have swelling in your hands
2) Second possibility is pregnancy induced hypertension. You should get your blood pressure and urine albumin checked.

You should restrict your salt intake and strict blood pressure control if it is on higher side. You should rest in left lateral position and keep your legs elevated when resting. If you have a head ache, abdominal pain or reduced urine output, you should consult your doctor immediately. Normally there will be swelling in legs on keeping your legs down for long time towards the end of pregnancy. But it is causing pain then you should consult your doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
