What Causes Swollen Gums And Pain In Inner Ear After Having Wisdom Tooth Removed?

I had my wisdom teeth extracted many years ago. A few years ago I noticed every few months the empty gum space where the tooth used to be becomes extremely swollen. So badly it splits, causes my cheek and inner ear hurt very badly. There is not pocket of puss it's all very hard back there.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

As per your complain if even after years of extraction of wisdom tooth if still you have pain and swelling at the site of wisdom tooth removal as well as the mucosa over the area splits there is a probability that there is remaining root piece that is left out in the socket accidentally during extraction or there can be a foreign body impaction or a granulomatous tissue that is present in the socket and it gets flared up leading to infection, inflammation and causes pain..
I would suggest you to consult an oral physician and get evaluated and an IOPAR [x-ray] can help in diagnosing the cause and in case if the root pieces are present in the extraction socket action of the same will resolve the problem..
Removal of the foreign body and curettage of the granulomatous tissue can help in resolution of the problem permanently..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..

Hi welcome to healthcaremagic
I have gone through your query & understand your concern

The swelling of gums & pain in the ears could be because of the residual infection in any left over piece of extracted wisdom tooth or it can be from infection in the next tooth. It may be due to gum infection in last tooth known as distal pocket, it is very common after extraction of wisdom tooth.
Consult a oral surgeon and get a radiograph done to rule out any tooth piece remained there. If it is infection in distal pocket site, get it curretted. If it is from the next tooth get the tooth treated with RCT.
In mean while , You can take a course of antibiotics like amoxicillin 500mg and metronidazole 400mg tid for 5 days (if you are not allergic) which is more effective than any drugs.

I hope my answer will help you
take care.
