What Causes Swollen Foot After Having Novocaine Shot On The Big Toe?

Had Novocain for podiatrist to cut away an ingrown toenail. Gave me two shots and still the medial side of my big toe was not numb. Gave me one or two more shots of Novocain. When I got home, my foot was very swollen. It has continued to be swollen two weeks later. In addition I flew to the west coast within those two weeks and my other foot swelled. Upon return, my feet swelled more. It s been a week and both feet are very swollen. A little better in the morning but not good. Your ideas?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The swelling feet can be related to an infection. I recommend using a hydrogen peroxide to clean the area and use Neosporin cream for local application. I also recommend to use anti inflammatory medication such as Acetaminophen 500 mg to relieve the swelling. If the symptoms continue, I suggest to consult the podiatrist for further treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
