What Causes Swelling, Pain And Redness In Toenail Post An Injury?

Alright so I went swimming in aa river yesterday and my toe got crushed by a rock. I didn t realize the stuff growing on the rock got under my toenail. My toe is swollen, red, and hurts horribly. Can you tell me what this means? It hurts to bad to clean under my nail.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Thanks for posting onHCM
Nail pain, redness and swelling after an injury is normal. It is as a result of tissue response to the injury. That is an inflammatory reaction.I will suggest you take an anti-inflammatory pain drug like ibuprofen and avoid hurting the toe again and putting on tight shoes for now.Ice pack placement may help to numb pain if too intense.
Hope my answer will help you
