What Causes Swelling In Upper Lip Post Anesthesia For Dental Procedure?

my son had fillings yesterday, it was the first time he ever had them, but, when they numbed him up, they had him sit up so he could rinse, and his upper lip and nose were swollen, considerably. I have never seen this happen before. When I questioned it, I was told it was normal, and that it s because there was no place for the fluid to go. That seems a little unbelievable, but, it took around 4 to 5 hours for the effects to wear off, and the swelling did go away, and completely by this morning. My question is, was this an allergic reaction? or was this normal? It really has frightened me terribly, and he has to go back in 2 weeks for 3 more fillings.

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain swelling of the lip after the injection of local anaesthetic can be due to a few causes:

It can be due to some allergic reaction caused by the constituents of anaesthesia.

It may also be due to piercing of any blood vessel by the needle of injection leading to escape of blood into tissues..

One reason can be allergy to latex present into gloves and as soon as the latex came in contact with skin it causes allergic reaction and swelling.

I would suggest you to explain the entire sequence of symptoms to the dentist before the next time your child is treated..

Hope your query is solved..

Thanks and regards..
