What Causes Swelling In The Vein During IV?

My blown vein happened during IV injection at hospital.Put a cold pack on immediately but was unable to keep cold pack on during another procedure. Over night a vein just near bend in inside elbow is now swollen and is exquisitely painful. Applying cold press for last 15 minutes. What should I do now?

Hi there,

This is due to infiltration, meaning the IV blew out, which you already know. I'd actually recommend switching from a cold compress to a warm compress at this point. I'd do 15 minutes of heat, you can use a heat pad or a warm wash cloth. In terms of the swelling, I'd recommend keeping your arm elevated, and I mean really elevated - above the level of your heart, so that gravity can help things to drain downward. This is usually self limiting and should resolve within a week or two.

I hope this is helpful. Feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.
