What Causes Swelling In The Scrotum?

I am in a new relationship. My partner, a 58 year old man, and I had sexual intercourse last night. I noticed severe swelling in his scrotum but did not say anything. Needless to say it was impossible for penetration so he masturbated and I m confused. What questions should I be asking him after this frustrating evening. He doesn t appear to have any discomfort, but his erection was not fully there. After reading some of the online articles, I am a little scared. I care for him, but I do not want to deal with STD s. I am a 61 year old female.
