What Causes Swelling In The Middle Finger Along With Redness And Throbbing?

I had a leash of my lab rip through my fingers. I have been to a hand specialist 2 times in 3 weeks. According to the doctor I have a broken ring finger and middle finger above first knuckle. The problem is the middle finger swelling has not gone down and the tip (top knuckle) remains red and is throbbing. Is it possible to have an infection?
