What Causes Swelling In The Lower Legs And Ankles?

MY lower legs and ankles suddenly swelled up about 2 weeks ago. I saw my G.P. last week and she told me my Electrolytes were quite below normal and she told me to drink Gatorade but she did not tell me how much. Also I have Stenosis in my Lumber and Cervical Spine and arthritis In my Spine and Neuropathy in my left foot and increased numbness in my right foot all due to compression and damaged nerves.Would either of these problems be the cause of my legs to swell so suddenly? What do you think might be the cause?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
Swelling of legs and ankles is usually due to fluid accumulation and poor venous return. It may have many possible causes. Some of these causes include:
-Heart problems
-Kidney problems
-Liver problems
-Local compression disturbing venous drainage
-Peripheral neuropathy
-Lumbar stenosis may affect nerves innervating lower limbs and may contribut to such symptoms.
-And others
I will suggest you see your Doctor again for evaluation and tests like an ECG, liver and kidney function tests if they were not done last week. The following may help you get off your symptoms:
*Elevate legs while lying
*Take a diuretic like furosemide
*Fluid and salt restriction
I will also encourage you see your Doctor to investigate and identify exact cause so as to prevent recurrence.
Hope this will help
Wish you good health
