What Causes Swelling In The Lips And Breathing Difficulty?

Hello. My name is Jade White. I am asking for my brother. We don t know what is going on. A few days ago he his lip became swollen. I felt of it of his lip to see if it soft or hard. It was hard. That night he start to say a few time that it was hard for him to breathe like his throat was swelling up. I asked. He didn t eat, drink, or do anything that he would have an allergic reaction to or that would cause his throat to swell. I gave him some Ibuprofen for his lip told him to try to relax and take deep breaths. Last night he had cold sweats. Then today he comes to me his lip is still swollen still hard, his breathing is better but he is still feeling like he has a bit of an issue with it. He is still sweating, though he doesn t have a fever. I am an herbalist and sense this started i have been trying to make something i haven t yet nor have i given him anything else. He hasn t taken anything else. If you could please help. Thank you. Thank you for your time.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM.
I have gone through your question and understand your concern.
It seems that it is angioedema. Its like an allergic reaction.
If I were your treating doctor,I would recommend,
-Firstly to find out the provoking factor, any recent intake or change in medicines, food like fish, eggs;insect bites or weather.Stopping further exposure is necessary.
-Tab cetrizine/loratidine for 3-4 days and Tab prednisolone 5 mg thrice in decreasing doses over 1-2 weeks.(prescription drug)
-local application of cold compresses over the lips will help reduce swelling.
-Maintain adequate hydration
-Avoid drugs like ibuprofen (Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) unless the cause of allergy is established.
-Report to ER immediately if there is breathing difficulty or eating /drinking becomes difficult as it may be become more severe.
Hope this information helps.
Thanks and regards.
