What Causes Swelling In The Feet And Ankles?

I ve been to my PCP and cardiologist trying to find out why my legs, ankles and feet are swollen and toes feel numb. My stress tests and ekgs don t show that it s my heart. My PCP diagnosed it as congestive heart failure. I had pneumonia 5/5/14 and 3 weeks later the swelling started. I ve had chest pains, very tired, nausea and my kidneys hurt. I m concerned that they can t find out what wrong.

Hi, thanks for posting your concern in the HCM.
I think the provisional diagnosis made by your PCP was quite logical, because dependent edema in lower extremity warrants further investigations to rule out congestive heart failure (CHF). A normal EKG and stress test can role out ischaemic heart disease (IHD), which can precipitate CHF. But, even with normal EKG and stress test you may have CHF.
However, there are other conditions too that can cause this, particularly when you feel a renal pain. An infection in the blood, renal or liver compromise, thyroid problem should all be ruled out.
A complete blood count, CRP, urea, creatinine, electrolytes, fasting TSH, LFT, HbA1c, routine urine examination, pro-BNP may be done to come to a diagnosis. Your doctor after clinical examination may also ask you to have a colour doppler of lower extremity vessels.
I think so far the evaluations of your doctors are correct. But, further evaluations are needed to come to a specific diagnosis.
