What Causes Swelling In The Feet And Ankles After Taking Amlopidine?

Hi - I am taking Amlopidine 5mg which my GP has reduced from 10mg due to the side effects which include swollen feet and ankles with a rash and irritation on both legs below the knee. I am still getting swollen feet and skin irritation on the lower legs. My Doctor has suggested a duretic (apologies for the spelling) if I still suffer side effects but has said that this could trigger my gout. Can you give me your opinion on this and offer another medicine to combat my hypertension - I am also taking Ramipril 10mg per day. Many thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Amlodipine is known to cause swelling of hands and feet. This is due to vasodilation (dilation of blood vessels) effect and subsequent leakage of fluid. Fluid generally collects is dependent parts of body such as hands and feet.
Advice
1.     Continue amlodipine 5 mg daily and ramipril as suggested
2.     Frusemide 20 mg daily orally for 10 days
3.     Apply calamine lotion every 6 hours for skin irritation
4.     Avoid abrupt withdrawal of amlodipine
5.     Keep your leg elevated by keeping 2 pillows under your leg when you are lying down
6.     Stay active and focus on stretching and moving the legs and hands
7.     Stand up or move around at least once every hour
8.     Consume less salt preferably less than 2 gram in a day
9.     Reduce weight if you are overweight by exercise and dietary control
10.     Do not smoke or drink alcohol
Thanks
