What Causes Swelling In The Brain?

My friend was rushed to hospital with swelling on the brain causing incoherent speech ....scan results are awaited but is it likely to be a cancerous tumour? Prostate cancer was treated severs, years ago....my friend is fit and healthy, this is a real shock. Can the swelling now reduced ( my friend has been released from hospital pending scan results dud next week) be something less serious than cancer.
