What Causes Swelling In The Arm After Withdrawal Of Blood?

i had a blood draw from my arm thursday, afterwards it swelled up and was red which turned blue/purple (bruise) friday. I normally get blood draws andnever in the last 12 years have i encountered this issue. What would cause swelling and bruising from a simple blood draw?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Is the bruising localized in the place where was inserted the needle for taking blood? If so it can be due to a damage of a blood vessel during the manipulation with the needle, and the rupture of a small vessel can cause what is called hematoma, where the blood runs out the vessels in the area around and it goes away for some days by itself.

Have you noticed bruises in other places? If so you need to do some blood examination like CBC, thrombocytes, thrombin time, activated thromboplastin time, prothrombin time and platelet function, to see if you have a blood disorder. But, if you don't have bruises elsewhere and it is localized in the place where your blood was drawn better see a monitor yourself if you have bruises elsewhere.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Emilda Belortaja
