What Causes Swelling In The Ankles While On Valsartan And Norvasc?

I have been taking Bystolic 10 mg, and Valsartan 320 mg (increased from 160 mg four months ago) for high bp. My gp also added Norvasc 10 mg four months ago. A month ago I saw a neurologist for familiar tremors, who recommended that I stop the Bystolic and replace it with propranolol ER 60 mg. He felt that this would continue treating the bp issue and might also reduce the tremors. After two weeks on the increased Valsartan, the Norvasc and the propranolol, my feet and ankles started to swell by mid afternoon, and I have had a nagging headache--sometimes more painful. (I also take meds for diabetes, thyroid, cloresterol, depression and mood stabilization. The mood stabilizer was increased from 100 to 150 mg four months ago.) My concern is the swelling and beaches.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

We will try to help you in best way possible. First of all it's sad to know what you had been going through lately. Based on the history you have shared, most notorious drug in your case is Norvasc to cause such swellings and may need to be replaced. Consult your primary care physician if it can be replaced with ACE inhibitors and diuretics for both overcoming the side effect and decreasing the swelling.l after going through your detailed medical records to rule out any other contraindications.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
