What Causes Swelling In The Ankle After A Tibial Plateau Fracture?

I broke my tibia plateau bone and I have been having swelling all the way down to my ankle really bad. I just noticed today that when I press my finger into my shine bone, it stays indented for quite a long time like a sponge. Is this Normal? What could be wrong? I also don t understand why I m swelling so bad around my ankle from a knee break.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello, my name is Dr.Dorina Gurabardhi. I understand your concern.
Tibia can have a variety of complex injuries that often involve the knee and ankle as well.
These fractures are treated surgically to try to ensure the best possible outcome for the leg that will include the ankle or knee.
Immobility is prolonged and recovery is not likely for 18 months.
The knee and ankle are the important concerns and early physiotherapy will help to address the mobility of these joints. Long term impairment can be an issue without appropriate advice.
I think that your need physiotherapy so you should see an orthopaed and a physiotherapist.
Hope my answer was helpful, if you have any other questions I'll be glad to help, thanks!
