What Causes Swelling In Lower Right Abdomen?

About 2 years ago, I developed a lower right abdominal flutter (best I can describe it), and on occasion a slight swelling. I did eventually have it checked, an ultra sound done and was told no hernia or abnormality that needed to be addressed. Recently, 11/30/15, I had a total left hip replacement and with putting more weight and stress on the right side, the area described started swelling, but with little to no pain present. A strong cough is felt in this area and minor discomfort. I can actually apply hand pressure and the swollen area goes down. Today is the first day there has been no swelling for about a month. Any advice or direction would be very much appreciated.

thank you for your query.
You seem to have a reducible hernia (ones that either go in on their own or that go in when you apply pressure).
The best Way to diagnose a hernia is to visualise it.
I would recommend that you see your physician when you have the swelling or try to cough and show them the swelling.

a hernia usually does not pose a threat unless it's very huge or gets strangulated by the defect in the abdominal wall through which it pops out, in which case, severe pain occurs due to the damage of the strangulated tissue and you have to go the ER.

However, I recommend seeing your doctor, who can examine and decide the course of action.
please avoid lifting heavy objects and support that area with you hand when you cough or sneeze.
hope I have helped and that you feel better soon.
Please feel free to get back to us if you need further clarification.
Wish you good health.
