Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What is the cause of swelling in the feet and ankles. I take medicine for high blood pressure, I do not have diabetes. I have a weight problem, I need to lose 40-50 pounds. It mostly happens when I am at work sitting all day, once I start moving around, and/or elevate my legs the swelling goes down.
Swelling of the feet can be related to different possible causes , such as: (1) venous disease. The veins in the legs normally take blood back up to the heart and only move in this direction. If the one way valves are not working well then blood can build up in the legs causing swelling.
This may be the case for you since it is more common if there is increased weight.
(2)side effect of medication such as the BP med amlodipine
(3)heart, kidney or liver disease can also cause swelling.Blood tests for the kidney and liver can be done
If heart disease is suspected then other tests such as an ECG and possibly an echo, would be needed.
I hope this helps
