What Causes Swelling At The Back Of The Head While On Prednisone?

Just went through IV solumedrol treatment 3 days for MS Flare. First day on prednisone pack and back of head and neck are extremely sore and swelled. Is this a side effect of treatment. Have had many treatments in past 2 years with no reaction like this.

Hi,

Prednisone belongs to a group of medications called corticosteroids. Corticosteroids, especially in high doses, can cause symptoms similar to Cushing's syndrome which is excess of body's natural steroid cortisol. It can cause accumulation of fat in the back and neck area which makes it look like buffalo hump. However, you are unlikely to develop it within a day of usage. Moreover, fat deposition is not sore.

Your symptoms could be described by carbuncle which is commonly located in that area, it can cause redness, swelling, and pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
