What Causes Swelling Around An Infected Ingrown Toenail?

Hello, and I ve been wondering a few things, here they are: My ingrown toe was recently infected, for the first time after trying to cut some of the ingrown toenails of after successfully doing it a thousand times before... and some of the skin around the infection has been falling off, it has swelled up and since it has swelled up the ingrown toenail feels like its puncturing my toe sharper then before, that was 3 weeks ago and now it feels much better after I have put some antibiotic cream on it, however I realised after investigating if I need more cream or need to somehow fix it in any way, and seeing the progress down the pocket my toe was bleeding, I wondered if it was the skin decaying at a high speed, was it me actually picking at it? And yes I discovered it was me picking at it or something... as I looked at it and pulled the skin back a bit to get a better look there was a raw bit, or maybe not even raw, as if it was cut into... as I looked at it more there was this stick sort of dry subtance, like glue on the toenail, I thought it had something to do with the infection since it was yellow like the infection and decided to scrape it away, as I did that and looked at the raw hole thing again blood started gushing out, tons of blood from what seemed to be the swelling was leaking out, I quickly put a tissue on it and pressured it but it still bled for around 5 minutes, however it stopped and I put some tissue around the issue so no infections could get in that spot. The next morning Ive now seen this big black and red, clot of skin tissue that had formed as I think acting as a plug, it was probably a scab or skin regrowing from the skin that had come off suddenly that had decided to grow down there, then having the blood expand it, the glue subtance like is still on my nail around it, what should I do? Should I wait? Should I take it out? I have no idea what to do as of right now. What makes me losing all that blood worse is that Ive been sick and coughed out a little bit of blood because of unknown reasons, got a nose bleed up my nose so I couldnt stop it and it GUSHED blood out, ive just lost so much blood so I would like to stop one of my problems, thanks for listening.

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Ingrown toenail is a condition in which there is overgrowth of the toenails edges towards the soft skin inwards leading to inflammation and severe pain and swelling in the area..

It is generally seen in individuals with bigger toenails as well as it can also occur if you wear tight shoes or you do not trim the nails properly..

It is a common cause of infection and repeated episodes of inflammation, swelling, bleeding and pus discharge..

You appear to have infection due to ingrown toenail..

You should see a Podiatrist or an Emergency doctor as home treatment is not sufficient for relief..

You might been advised creams with combination of medications like antibiotic and antifungal creams along with steroid cream to relieve pain and swelling..
You should soak your feet in warm water with dissolved Epsom salt and when the nail and skin become soft gently raise the nail at the corners outwards and trim gently.
It will prevent nail from growing inwards..
You can also wear proper fitting shoes..
Trim your nails as soon as they grow sufficiently and do not let them grow very long..
You can also soak your feet in Epson salt solution..

At times in cases in which the medical or conservative treatment fails you can be advised to go for surgical treatment like Matrixectomy..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
