What Causes Swelling And Tenderness In The Lower Sternum?

Hi I went to the Dr. today. For 3+ months I have had a swollen, tender to the touch lower sternum. As the months have gone on it has been causing more discomfort and now almost endless pain. It starts at the bottom of the sternum and progresses all the way directly through to my back and along my lower shoulder blades. The Dr. ordered EKG, which was normal. Ultra sound, blood work and x-ray. I do not have acid reflex, diarrhea, vomiting, ect. My sternum is tender to touch, swollen (feels like it has a lump on it) I'm concerned it is something serious, as 2 nurse practitioners and a Dr. all came, felt it and commented "well this isn't right!"
It is not tender above, around, below. No stomach pains ect.
