What Causes Swelling And Soreness At The Site Of Blood Draw?

Hi my husband had his blood drawn today as part of his yearly physical. His arm above the draw site has been swollen since the draw and sore. This has never happened before after a blood draw should we be concerned. He is a 49 yr old male in excellent health.

Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic.

I don't think there is anything to be concerned about. No specific intervention is required.
Swelling is most likely to be due to seepage of blood from the venepuncture site into the surrounding tissues (hematoma) and it is normal to be slightly sore after a needle puncture.
This can be avoided by applying firm pressure at the puncture site for 3-5 minutes after withdrawing the needle to let the clotting mechanism to activate and seal the puncture site.
The swelling would go down in about 24 hours and the sore feeling would subside too in 3-5 days.

Regards
