What Causes Swelling And Sore Muscles On The Right Calf?
I m 60 & I injured my right calf in an off road dirt bike mishap 4 days ago...there is some swelling & dark purple bruising & muscle soreness ... What symptoms should I watch out for that would be of major concern that would have me rushing to the ER?
You would be having contusion of the soft tissues and muscles of the right calf. Possibly a few muscle fibers could be torn, and this must have caused at least mild hematoma formation leading to the purple discoloration. The most important treatment is to give absolute rest to the right leg, so that the calf muscles are not strained. With rest, over a period of time depending on the degree of soft tissue injury, it will heal. It may take 2 to 4 weeks. It would be good if you could use a 'Walker', and use the left foot for ambulation, with no weight bearing on the right foot. If there is increasing swelling, pain, redness, it could denote onset of infection, and you would have to take a course of antibiotics. In such case, please consult a General Surgeon, who can examine you and give appropriate medication.
