What Causes Swelling And Redness On The Forehead?

My husband has a place on his forehead which was red and has now skin is broken in two places. Slight Swelling has occurred downward to his left eye and nose and backward an inch or two. A spot about midway between the original redness and his eye looks like it might break open. He saw a physician s assistant this AM who had no idea but prescribed mupirocin 2 per cent ointment. He had ringworm a couple of months ago and we still have some of that. What might this be and what should he do about it.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi

Your symptoms and description fit in with bacterial skin infection(boil)going in for further infection.

In most cases. The bacteria is likely to be staphylococcus which causes localised infection of skin leading to collection of pus.-in medical terms it is called an abcess.

In addition to bactroban oinment(ideally as bulk application and under occlusion daily dressing) it is advisable to take a course of oral antibiotic like cephalosporin and a medication to reduce swelling luke ibu brufen.

It is better to check sugsr leveks as elevated blood sugar levels as in uncontrolled diabetes can cause bacteria to multiply fast leading to rapidly increasing size of the swelling.

Hope this helps.
