What Causes Swelling And Pitting Edema In The Leg?

i am a 53 y/o male - no smoke - no drugs - 1-2 alcohol drinks per week or fewer; over last two weeks have developed leg swelling with mild pitting edema in ankles; mild discomfort in calves and ankles; and a systolic heart murmur *lub - dub/swoosh . I have no previous hx of serious illness - urine and BM normal - mild type a personality - working nights and going back to school for FNP/PNP (last semester). Prop feet up in evening with minimal improvement; able to climb 5 flights of steps in one go - of course breath heavily; wt 186 ht 5 11 - some belly fat - not fit but not out of shape (retired military - healthy lifestyle); will be seeing MD in two weeks for exam... any thoughts would be appreciated - family hx benign with longevity 80-100 and no heart disease; calves not red - left slightly more swollen than R; concerned for restrictive L side heart issue... Hi,

Swollen ankles and swollen feet are common and usually not cause for concern, particularly if you have been standing or walking a lot. But feet and ankles that stay swollen or are accompanied by other symptoms could signal a serious health problem.

Possible cause is LymphedemaL is filtered through the lymph nodes, which trap and destroy unwanted substances, such as bacteria. When there is a problem with the vessels or lymph nodes.

However, the fluid's movement can be blocked. Untreated, lymph buildup can impair wound healing and lead to infection and deformity.

Lymphedema is common following radiation therapy or removal of the lymph nodes in patients with cancer. If you have undergone cancer treatment and experience swelling, see your doctor right away.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
