What Causes Swelling And Pain In Wrist And Hand?

Jan 8, my husband had his annual physical. His blood analysis showed uric acid to be a bit high, so started on Allopurinal. About two weeks later, his right wrist and hand swelled up and he had severe pain when moving that joint. Back to Dr. on Feb. 9 for blood analysis which showed uric acid normal. Still has swelling in the wrist and was referred to hand surgeon who took X-rays and found only a little arthritis which he felt could not cause the pain he was having. The swelling slowly began to subside, but he still had pain. Last week took 6-day Methylprednisolone. The swelling is down and most of the pain is gone with the exception of the thumb joint. The pain is enough that prohibits him from even picking up a cup of coffee. Any suggestions what it could be and any other specialist he should see. Thank you.
