What Causes Swelling And Pain In Fingers After Trigger Finger Surgery?

I had trigger finger surgery four weeks ago. I have some swelling near the area of the surgery but it is not red or hot. I get occasional shooting pains that occur through the finger from the area of the surgery continuing up to the top knuckle in the finger. This occurs sometimes when I m doing nothing but sitting and relaxing in a chair. The pain is sometime excruciating and will last for a minute or two then goes away. My hand is still sore when I stretch the fingers either by opening or closing them after they have been in the same position for a few minutes. I have had surgery on three other trigger fingers and have always seemed to have fully recovered in 2 to 3 weeks and have never experienced this type of pain like what I have had from any of the 3 previous surgeries. What is the possible problem? My email is YYYY@YYYY

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

There are various reasons for the swelling and pain in fingers after trigger finger surgery as:
- Tissue edema post operative phase
- Inadequate release of nerve compression
- External compression from supportive wear
- Non compliance with medications as anti inflammatory drugs or others
- Prolong hand dependency
- Early return to work
- Uncontrolled diabetes

In my clinic, after clinical examination, I do recommend an MRI for recheck of the underlying healing status of the operative area.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
