What Causes Swelling And Numbness In Toes Post Ankle Injury?

I injured my right ankle 6 days ago. I saw an urgent care doctor the following day that xrayed the ankle and said there were no breaks that it was just a sprain. The ankle and foot swelled up significantly almost immediately and after 5-6 days of icing and elevation the swelling has finally come down. The problem now is that my toes have been numb to the touch for almost 2 days and have had a burning sensation the past little while. They are bruised and swollen but I can seem to wiggle them. Is this normal ?

Hi
Thanks for your question.

From reading about your problem, I believe that the swelling in your ankle and foot caused a reduced blood flow to the toes and also pressed upon a nerve supplying the toes causing the symptoms.
These symptoms should go away gradually as your ankle heals.

Please keep in mind that as long as your toes are warm and red (That is, blood supply continues) you should be fine.

Hope I could answer your question. Please feel free to get back to me if you have any further questions.
I find this answer helpful
