General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
MS causes swelling of ankle & leg due to fewer movements of muscles leading to less pumping up of lymphatic... which stagnate in the lower part of the leg.
Overstretching of skin results in breaking of small blood capillaries to cause discolouration.
-Insufficient heart functioning (with short breaths, palpitations, high blood pressure) can also cause edema on the dependent part of the body... i.e. feet, ankle & up.
-Varicose veins or deep vein thrombosis cause similar symptoms with pain & inflammation.
You need to get MRI of the leg/4d USG of leg vessels done to find exact cause followed by specific management.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale,
