What Causes Swelling And Burning Sensation On The Lips?

My husband has a tooth that was chipped when a teen. He had a cap that later got an infection in the gum. An oral surgeon drilled a hole in it behind this cap and put antibiotic in it. It was good for years but he had to have a root canal. I noticed it looked like it was uneven some months ago and recently he felt it turn while eating and turned it back. He consulted a dentist and he said it had bacteria in it...gave him antibiotic but a second opinion and he said the bacteria is still there. He started having burning lips and boiled them with peroxide. They swell very big when he does this but the burning goes away. He continues and they get better but peel. This is the second time this has happened. I am wondering if this can be because of the bacteria in the gums. He say a Dr. for a sinus infection when he 1st had this and was given an antibiotic which also cleared this up. Is this something for the dentist or Dr. The peroxide draws out a lot of fluid and swells bad. I just though of this as being related to the tooth problem today.????

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your explanation it looks like if the tooth is a front tooth then swelling of lip can be due tooth infection.
Other common cause of lip swelling can be allergic reaction.
So my suggestion is to consult a Dentist and get checked.
An x ray can be done for confirmation.
If tooth is deeply infected and there is deep infection leading to abscess formation then you can either get re-up root canal treatment or extraction done depending on condition of the tooth.
Do not use excess of hydrogen peroxide as it can be damaging to the skin if overused.
Do cool compresses over the lip.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,.
