What Causes Swelling And Bruising On The Ring Finger?

Can you tell the difference between a broken finger and a jammed finger simply by looking at it? I fell today and my fourth ring finger is swollen and the lower knuckle is huge. It has turned black and blue and is swollen. I can feel what seems to be fluid around that knuckle. But if it s just jammed I don t want to go to see a doctor.

Hello,

In case of broken finger there will be extreme pain and you will feel crepitation on touching. To rule out fracture, only x-ray is a confirmative test. For swelling and brushing, you should apply ice packs over the finger. If fracture is ruled out it will subside within a week. Continue application of ice pack.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Nisha Agrawal
