What Causes Sun Burn?

i got sunburned really bad on saturday i think it is sun poisoning. my sister said that at the divit below the neck, but above the sternum, looks like it is turning purple. and it does kindve hurt but it didnt start hurting till a couple of hours ago. and like i said i got the sun burn on saturday. is that normal or should i go see my doctor a.s.a.p?
