What Causes Sudden Temporary Ceasing Of Breath Along With Facial Redness?
Symptoms: During a bad coughing fit, my husband stopped breathing, his head slumped to one side, his face became more red and swollen. I called his name, then slapped his face two times to get him to come to and breath. He smokes. What happened? Did his diaphragm freeze? Or something more serious? He was out about 8 seconds.

I really appreciate your concern, such symptom of breathing difficulty while coughing could be due to chocking or obstruction of trachea due to mucus plug, in my opinion such condition need to be taken seriously and better to get done clinical examination and tests like x-ray of chest, smoking should be quit hope this information helps.
