What Causes Sudden Loss Of Hearing In The Ear?

Hi there. I am a 40 yr old female, good health, former smoker. I doctored a cold at home for almost 3 weeks, went to Urgent Care last Sunday morning & was prescribed a Zpack. On Wednesday night, after dinner I started to lose the hearing in my right ear. Within 30 minutes, my hearing in that ear was gone. I put a couple of drops of vinegar in it, let it drain, then held a hot wash cloth on it, didn t help. I was soon in excruciating pain & went to the ER. The pain was so intense, that I was given a shot of dilated. I was diagnosed with a sever ear infection & sinusitis & prescribed Amoxicillian & (OTC) Sudafed. I am on day 5 of those with still no relief from the cold & no hearing in my right ear. What could possibly be wrong?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of sudden loss of hearing in ear. Usually hearing loss occur gradually , but in your case hearing loss was sudden . It seems to me that the hearing loss in your case occur due to some secondary reason like infection ( ear infection or upper respiratory infection ) , trauma , blood circulation problem , neurological problem , allergy or due to some drugs. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to undergo test known as hearing test called pure tone audiometry which is used to determine if the hearing loss is caused by sound not reaching the inner ear or by a sensorineural deficit (because the ear isn’t processing the sound that reaches it). Doctor may prescribe anti inflammatory drugs along with steroid and intratympanic corticosteroid therapy .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
