What Causes Sudden Increase In Blood Pressure In An Elderly Person?
Are there physical conditions of significance that would cause a transient rise in blood pressure to approximately 200/100. This has occurred once than we are aware of, in the evening. The next morning it was still up around 165/80. Later in the afternoon went down to normal. No physical or mental symptoms are present. This is in an 82 year old woman who is very healthy and active and typically has blood pressure around 130-140/70.
Sudden increase in blood pressure could happen when there is missing/irregular intake of blood pressure medications, emotional disturbance or physical exhaustion. Many a times, it can also happen due to error during recording as the blood pressure cuff might not have been tied properly or recorded soon after physical activity.
In any case, since the blood pressure has been back to under control, kindly do a regular check-up to see if it has been maintained well. If you notice such fluctuations frequently, you need to seek medical attention promptly.
Hope the information provided would be helpful. Let me know if I can assist you further. All the best.
