What Causes Sudden Cough And Breathing Trouble While Sleeping?

My husband started snoozing on the couch and woke up in a cough attack, he said his lungs feel like they have fluid in them and he has since had trouble catching his breath. It's been about 20 minutes now and he's feeling light headed. He's had about 4 beers in the last 3 hours. What can we do to help his breathing? Do we need to go to the ER?

Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Sudden onset cough and breathing trouble in night is mostly seen with heart failure.
So better to consult emergency room urgently and get done ecg and 2d echo to rule out heart failure.
He may need diuretic and other cardiac supportive drugs.
Ask him to avoid beer drinking.
So don't wait at home, immediately consult doctor and start appropriate treatment.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wishing good health to your husband. Thanks.
