What Causes Subconjunctival Hemorrhage In The Eye?

I have blood in area of one eye closest to my nose. Not there yesterday. Noticed this morning after arriving at work. No known injury. May be spreading toward iris. Could this be one sign of a stroke? I have not had this happen before without knowing that I had an injury.
