What Causes Stretch Marks On The Abdomen During Pregnancy?

Hi I am currently 38 weeks pregnant and stretch marks have developed around belly button piercing and below belly button, they are gradually getting worse. I first noticed them 5 weeks ago, how do I know which treatment is best/most effective as in non surgical. I am considering a tummy tuck to completely remove the stretch marks but I may have another baby after this so would wait. However in the meantime I do not want to feel horrible about my body. Thank you Louise

Hello,

Unfortunately, there is very little that can be done for stretch marks in pregnancy.

Given the rapid growth of the baby, the abdominal skin does not have enough time to keep up and subsequently expands causing “stretch marks”.

Moisturizing is suggested and may help in some cases. These are incredibly common, particularly in pregnancy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Josh , General & Family Physician
