HI, thanks for using healthcare magic
There are different possible causes of delayed or
irregular periods such as:
(1)polycystic ovarian syndrome- this is the
metabolic syndrome that your doctor was referring to.
It is associated with resistance to insulin.
One of the main aspects of treatment is
weight loss of any excess weight. This , on its own, can sometimes cause the periods to become normal.
Metformin can also help. It reduces the
insulin resistance, helps with weight loss (in some persons) and can cause the periods to normalize.
(2) emotional or physical stress or illness can also result in period delay
(3)inadequate diet
(4)abnormal levels of thyroid hormone
(5)high levels of prolactin hormone
These hormone levels can be checked by blood tests
(6)extreme exercise
I hope this helps
