What Causes Stomach Pain And Diarrhea While Being Lactose Intolerant?

Hello.I am a 18 year old female. I am very lactose intolerant and have been experiencing stomach pain for almost year now. it comes and goes but it recently came back. I have been doing and elimination diet and have eliminated Gluten and have felt significantly better the past week but my stomach pain is now back. My other symptoms include stomach cramping and sharp stabbing pains, bloated, gas, diarrhea, nauseous, fatigue, inability to fall asleep(used to take melatonin supplements). Any suggestions as to what it might be or ways I can help it? -Maura

Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
With a past history of lactose intolerance, it may explain your present symptoms. However, other may conditions not related to lactose intolerance may be causing symptoms or aggrating your underlying condition.Possible causes may include:
-Bacterial, viral or parasitic digestive infection
-Food poisoning
-Artificial sweeteners
-Other digestive disorders like Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, microscopic colitis and irritable bowel syndrome.
I will suggest you see the Doctor for a stool exam/culture
In the meantime, i will advise you try the following:
-Take oral rehydration salt to replenish fluid and ions losses
-Zinc tablets to help in intestinal mucosa repair
-Take an anti-diarrheal like imodium
-Drink enough water to prevent dehydration
-Avoid large servings of milk and other dairy products
-Include small servings of dairy products in your regular meals
-Eating and drinking lactose-reduced ice cream and milk
-Drinking regular milk after you add a liquid or powder to it to break down the lactose.
If these measures do not help you, you see a Gastrologist for evaluation.
Hope this will help
Wish you good health
