What Causes Stinging And Burning Sensation In Thigh Area Long After A Calf Injury?

many years ago i accidentally stabbed my self in the calf with a steak knife. i now have numbness that has reached far into the middle of my thigh. i believe i have nerve damage and it seems to be getting worse. i have been feeling a stinging or burning sensation in the numbed area of my thigh. what are your thoughts on this and could it possibly get worse?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Based on the symptoms described, it is definitely possible that you have nerve damage.

Trauma is one of the common causes of neuropathy (abnormal structure and function of the nerves).

It should not get worse unless the nerve is repeatedly traumatized.

There are medications that can help with nerve related symptoms such as gabapentin, amitriptyline, nortriptyline, lyrica, cymbalta, tegretol.

Your doctor would be able to prescribe one of these for you . He or she may want to rule out other causes of neuropathy eg vitamin b12 or folate deficiency, diabetes, liver or kidney disease, infection

I hope this helps
