What Causes Stiffness In The Neck While Treating Bronchitis?

I have been sick for 2 weeks now, viral infection, then a cold, then it turned into bronchitis. For the past 3 days I have had a very bad stiff neck that started out as an irritation and has only gotten worse. I was guessing that maybe I pulled a muscle from coughing or something, but nothing seems to help make it any better. Should I be worried about Meningitis?

Thanks for contacting HCM with your health concern

1. As there is presence of viral infection as the cause of Bronchitis thus initially rest, taking plenty of fluids to keep mucus thin, and cough suppressant [if dry] are sufficient but since there is worsening of symptoms for 3 days thus exclude complications related with bronchitis like asthma and pneumonia first [consult a chest specialist for chest x ray]

2. To exclude meningitis one should consult a Neurologist who apart from neck stiffness will look for associated symptoms like: fever, headache, neurological signs [weakness of cranial nerves/limbs] and order a C.T.Scan Brain.

PS. As infection is the most important cause of pneumococcal meningitis, and bronchitis is also a type of pneumococcal infection [although mild] thus can confuse the physician as well as diagnosis, so you must visit healthcare physician to determine whether you are to be kept under observation or requires hospitalization after suitable blood tests.
