What Causes Stiffness And Pain On The Lower Back?

Every time I sit for a period of time, My back is stiff and I cant stand up straight right away without pain. I CAN NOT lay on my stomach and watch t.v.. It is too painful on my lower back. Most of the time I feel a naggy throb ache in my lower back. WHen I massage or rub ben gay on the lower back it eases it for just a little while. What could this be. I am a 42 year old female 5'6" and 158lbs. I am raising my 14 month grandson and picking him up sometimes brings tears to my eyes, The pain is that bad.
